State Sales Tax Exemption Needed for Food Banks

Iowa Food Bank Association Encourages

Bi-Partisan Support for Iowa Food Banks Sales Tax Exemption

The Iowa Food Bank Association (IFBA) member food banks provide more than 33 million meals across Iowa annually.  The IFBA request the state legislature to exempt the food banks from the sales tax for the purchase price of tangible personal property or specified digital products sold and services purchased by a non profit food bank. Four of the six food banks serving Iowa currently pay sales tax for taxable materials and services; this sales tax exemption would allow the nonprofit food banks to provide more than 1 million meals through our partners to feed the hungry rather than utilizing greatly needed funds to pay for state sales tax.

Iowans are asked to contact their legislator to express their support for this initiative to help in work to feed Iowans who may go to bed hungry.

Hunger exists in all 99 Iowa counties.

The six non-profit food banks serving Iowa work with more than 1,200 non profit partners such as faith based organizations, soup kitchens, and local pantries to feed more than 340,000 Iowan children, seniors, veterans and disabled currently in need of food.

All are invited to join the food banks in the fight against hunger.
